Muay Thai & Training FAQS
- What is muay thai? Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is the national sport of Thailand and is a standing combat sport that utilises punches, elbows, knees, and kicks as well as some clinching techniques, which is why it is referred to as the 'art of eight limbs'. It's a striking art that was developed over centuries primarily for warfare as a substitute for a weapon, in its pre-modern form known as 'Muay Boran'. Once Western-style boxing reached Thailand around the 1920s, its influence, the introduction of a Western-style boxing ring, and the increased frequency of cross-martial art bouts Thai boxers were facing over the following decades meant that the martial underwent rapid modernisation over the century and came to be perfected in its current form, now known as Muay Thai. Today, Muay Thai has experienced a massive growth in popularity, providing the base for striking in MMA, and is practiced all around the world. With the sport being formally recognised by the Olympics in 2021, it might not be long before we see Muay Thai being competed on the Olympic stage. If you're interested in doing Muay Thai. You should come down to one of our sessions. As Muay Thai requires you to hone and use every single muscle in your body, you'll quickly find out that it is the ultimate whole-body workout and you might even have a lot of fun working on combos! - What do you do in muay thai? As Muay Thai is a ring-based combat sport like Boxing, most training sessions involve working on your technique and increasing your stamina while hitting the pads and bag. You will learn how to move and strike effectively in your dominant stance and practice your technique through shadow boxing. You will be paired up with a trainer partner during the classes who will help you work on your pad work, striking drills or even sparring. An experienced instructor will teach you how to block, counter and evade strikes as well as punch, kick, knee, elbow, and clinch effectively. As a muay thai practitioner, you will also need to work on your flexibility and mobility by stretching and performing specific exercises, which will be worked on alongside general muay thai training. - Can you start muay thai with no experience? Yes, you can! Whether it's boxing or any other sport, you will always have to learn the fundamentals and techniques from scratch. If you're new to Thai boxing don't be afraid to join our Muay Thai boxing gym. We have beginner classes that will suit those with no experience or those with some previous experience in another martial art. We like to focus on getting the fundamentals of Muay Thai right, so you don't have to feel nervous before your first session as a beginner.
